At Davos, It’s Javier Milei vs. Everyone

What’s happening: Newly sworn-in Argentinian President Javier Milei took a verbal blowtorch to Western leaders in a fiery speech at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland. He accused them of being “co-opted” by neo-Marxists and globalists who seek to subvert Western civilization.

• Quote: Milei echoed Ronald Reagan when he said, “Do not surrender to the advance of the state. The state is not the solution. The state is the problem itself.”

• Catch up: The WEF hosts an annual gathering of powerful leaders from government and industry each year in Davos. The globalist group gained attention from the populist right in 2016 for its Orwellian prediction that by 2030, “You’ll own nothing and you’ll be happy.”

Calls to ban “misinformation”: EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also spoke at the gathering and discussed how big business needs to help governments block “misinformation and disinformation,” which she called the “top concern for the next two years.”

• Paradoxically: Von der Leyen said this while also saying that people in the E.U. have “the right to speak [their] mind.”

Why it matters: Milei’s adamant defense of free markets and his critique of progressive ideas like “radical feminism” and collectivism presented a bright contrast between him and other leaders at Davos, many of whom embrace globalist ideas.
