Yesterday, President Joe Biden signed the Ukraine Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act of 2022 into law, which will expedite the process of sending military aid to Ukraine.
The legislation cuts bureaucratic red tape and allows the “gifting of equipment” with the stipulation that recipient countries will eventually repay the United States.
The history: The original lend-lease act was created in 1941 to help the allies defeat Hitler’s Germany. It was crucial to the war efforts. Members of congress like Pelosi reiterated the historical theme that, like in 1941, Democracy is now under threat in Europe and around the world.
Notable Republicans who voted against the measure were Matt Gaetz, Paul A. Gosar, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Thomas Massie. They see the measure as a major escalation in the war that will extend the conflict instead of bringing peace. They also cite rising inflation, peak fentanyl overdoses, and other domestic difficulties that require immediate attention.
