Biden Takes AI woke

Governments across the globe are struggling to keep up with AI, but Biden has other concerns

What’s happening: Artificial intelligence is moving fast, and while other governments are focused on keeping up, the Biden administration is focused on “equity.”

Why it matters: Goldman Sachs estimates AI technology could replace a quarter of American workforce tasks and about 300 million jobs globally. But Biden’s recent action has other concerns.

  • Woke order: President Joe Biden recently signed an executive order mandating tech companies to "address algorithmic discrimination" and "ensure that AI advances equity.” The Biden administration is concerned AI can “deepen discrimination, bias, and other abuses in justice, healthcare, and housing.”

How others are harnessing AI: British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak recently hosted a conference with major tech companies and governments to discuss AI’s potential. There, Amazon and Google among others agreed to hand over information to governments about new AI models before releasing them to the general public.

  • Military applications: AI is being used on the battlefield in Ukraine to help analyze satellite footage and determine targets. Autonomous drones, armed robot dogs, or nuclear weapons systems have already been created or are in development.

  • Up close: A group of scientists used AI to find a new antibiotic capable of eliminating antibiotic-resistant bacteria. It was able to scan more than 100 million potential drug molecules in only three days.
