Also, Trump to limit sharing classified info

WHAT WE'RE WATCHING

🤐 White House to limit sharing classified info with Congress after leaks. Presidential administrations often share classified information with key members of Congress. But, infuriated by a leak of classified information regarding the Iran bombings, the Trump administration is going to limit how much they make available to Congress and their staffers. While policy leaks are routine in DC, leaking classified intelligence can jeopardize sensitive operations and national security.

Senate parliamentarian tore up large parts of the Big, Beautiful Bill. In a series of rulings, parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough determined that key pieces of the reconciliation bill — from Medicaid cuts to de-listing silencers from the National Firearms Act — did not comply with the Byrd Rule, which requires that all aspects of the bill relate to budgeting. Some Republicans called for MacDonough to be overruled, but Senate Majority Leader John Thune (SD) said he would not, comparing it to eliminating the filibuster.

🪖 A new bill would let Trump use the National Guard to enforce immigration. Currently, the president can only use the National Guard during emergencies, like the recent riots in LA; he cannot use them for domestic law enforcement. A new House bill would change that to allow for the enforcement of immigration laws. While the bill could feasibly pass the House, it would face a steep climb in the Senate, where Democrats could block it with a filibuster.

✂️ The State Department is about to fire thousands of staffers. The cuts — which could begin as soon as today — have been long-planned by Secretary of State Rubio and are expected to continue into the summer. Cuts could ultimately affect up to 15 percent of the department’s workforce, and come as part of a larger reorganization. The Supreme Court is currently considering whether the planned cuts will be allowed to proceed, but the State Department may not wait for their go-ahead.
