WHAT WE'RE WATCHING

🏛 The New York Supreme Court overturned Harvey Weinstein’s conviction. The disgraced Hollywood producer had his 2020 conviction for third-degree rape overturned due to N.Y.’s high court finding errors in a trial judge’s performance. Despite the case marking a major milestone in the #MeToo movement, Weinstein will have an opportunity to prove his innocence in a new trial once again.

📝 The FTC voted to ban non-compete contracts for employees. Last week, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) banned for-profit employers from requiring employees to sign contracts restricting them from switching jobs to a "competitor.” This rule will affect tens of millions of Americans, and advocates claim will allow workers to bargain for higher wages and benefits.

💰 Chicago approved $70 million for migrants as residents voice disapproval. Chicago’s city council approved tens of millions more dollars to care for illegal migrants on top of the $150 million already designated for them in the city budget. Around 40,000 migrants have found their way to the city since August 2022, depleting scarce city resources away from native Chicagoans.

Billions of dollars in settlements from pharmaceutical companies that pushed lethal opioids on Americans may not be sufficient to repair the damage inflicted on rural communities. Following the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives to opioid addiction, these communities are now grappling with even more deadly substances like fentanyl.
