How Serious is Trump’s Manifest Destiny?

What’s happening: President-elect Donald Trump caught the world’s attention this week by leaving open the possibility of using economic pressure and/or the American military to take control of Greenland. This comes on the heels of other statements indicating a desire to absorb Canada and regain control of the Panama Canal.

Bargaining: Trump once called dealmaking his “art form,” and it’s important to view his statements in this light. Trump very likely has no desire to send the military to conquer any of these locations; however, all three have something he wants.

Canada: Canadians overwhelmingly do not want to be American. However, the Great White North has high tariffs on American goods while bemoaning America’s protectionism. Trump is likely taking a strong position as a negotiating tactic to sway Canada to drop those tariffs.

If we don't act to protect our interests we will cease to be a sovereign nation. One concession at a time, we have weakened our position on the world stage.

I think this is just another one of Trump's chess moves and that the rhetoric wil be enough to send va rious messages to those intended to either stand fast or withdraw, in kind. If the intended responses are not acceptable, then you will see a Trump in motion!

Diplomacy is important in reaching agreements that could benefit each country listed. I would add Cuba and Venezuela to the list.
Cuba, potentially is becoming more desperate due to Russia’s own challenges. Its nearly 70 year old infrastructure continues to crumble. It would appear somewhat easy, in comparison, to the 3 countries listed to achieve a positive for US outcome and improve the lives of many Cubans. Hemingway would mostly likely be in agreement.

Venezuela is in need of a total reset of government and replacing a criminal regime with democratic alternative would benefit so many.

The ‘The Monroe Doctrine’ combined with Teddy Roosevelt’s strategy of ‘Speak softly and Carry a Big Stick’ comes to mind. TJ
