Ibram X. Kendi-Led Research Center Allegedly Mismanaged Millions

What’s happening: Over $43 million in grants given to activist professor Ibram X. Kendi’s Center for Antiracist Research at Boston University is largely unaccounted for three years after its founding. He’s been accused by former employees of misusing the center’s financial resources and is now being investigated by the university.

• Dive deeper: Kendi, who helped popularize Critical Race Theory and launched his research center during the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests, hasn't accomplished much research despite generous funding. Most of the staff was also recently laid off.

Why it matters: Some left-wing activists are facing scrutiny for questionable use of funds. BLM co-founder Patrisse Cullors reportedly moved millions in BLM donations to her family-run businesses. Last year, she also came under fire for using BLM money to buy a $6 million mansion in California.

• Plus, colleges and companies have poured millions into Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs. Many grew their DEI offices, hiring nearly 100 people and paying over six-figure salaries. Now, these offices are closing down.

Between the lines: Social justice has become a lucrative business for activists. Jumping on this trend, universities, companies, and governments have all added diversity programs or whole departments. For companies, the goal was to attract Democrat supporters. For universities and governments, it boosted progressive control over their institutions.
