Who the GOP Nominees for 2024 Could Be

The top two are former President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. While one recent poll shows them tied in a potential race, another shows DeSantis performing better with key groups. Though DeSantis hasn’t formally announced his race, those familiar with the situation say his campaign is definite, with an announcement months away. Trump’s recent attacks have almost entirely focused on the Florida governor, who he’s now calling “meatball Ron.”

The formerly Trump-aligned: Nikki Haley, the former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under Trump and former governor of South Carolina, just announced her bid for the presidency, making her the first Republican to actually toss a hat into the ring against Trump. Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who also served under Trump, also hinted at a run.

The Republican A-list: Other popular GOP lawmakers who may run for the Republican nomination include Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who ran in 2016 and is known as a more “fervent conservative.” South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem and Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin have also made names for themselves by battling for conservative values in education, culture, and public health in their states.

Others: It’s speculated that former Vice President Mike Pence may also run in 2024. But many Trump loyalists no longer favor him after he certified the 2020 electoral votes. South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott and New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu have also been mentioned as potential candidates. Larry Hogan, the former Republican governor of Maryland known for his moderate administration, is also expected to run.
