Republicans Unite to Condemn the ICC

The Old and New Right loathe the court and the international order it represents — but for different reasons.

What’s happening: The House of Representatives passed a bill, supported by every Republican, sanctioning members of the International Criminal Court (ICC) involved in prosecuting Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) wants to pass the bill next week for Donald Trump to sign.

  • The details: The bill punishes the ICC for investigating anyone who is a citizen or resident of an allied country which also does not recognize the ICC; neither America nor Israel do so.

  • Flashback: The Republican Party passed anti-ICC legislation before, under the presidency of Trump’s Republican predecessor, George W. Bush. That law allows the president to invade The Hague (where the ICC is located) if an American is detained.
