Steve Bannon May Go To Jail Over Jan. 6 Subpoena

Democratic politicians in Congress are currently attempting to jail political opponent and former-Trump Administration Chief Strategist Steve Bannon on two misdemeanor charges.
Bannon could see a year in jail for not complying. Steve Bannon was subpoenaed to testify publicly to the congressional panel to investigate January 6. However, after Bannon refused to comply with the subpoena, he was charged with two counts of contempt of Congress. He was found guilty of the two misdemeanor charges by a D.C. jury. He could face 30 days to one year in jail and a fine of up to $100,000.
The problem with a D.C. jury: There’s a widely held view that fair trials for conservatives might not be possible in D.C. Ninety-two percent of the nation’s capital voted for Biden in 2020, meaning getting a jury of peers—who don’t view conservatives as a political opposition—is nearly impossible.
Bannon argues that the panel’s subpoena of him was invalid due to Bannon’s executive privilege. Additionally, he refutes the committee’s legitimacy, as it was “invalidly” formed under House Resolution 503 and is a thoroughly partisan committee. However, this has not stopped Bannon’s political adversaries from touting his guilty verdict as political ammunition.
Chairman Benny Thompson and Vice-Chairman Liz Cheney, in a joint statement, claimed that Bannon’s guilty verdicts served as “accountability for all those responsible for the events of January 6,” calling it “a victory for the rule of law and an important affirmation of the Select Committee’s work.”
The reality: Bannon faces misdemeanor charges from the Biden-led Department of Justice for not complying with the subpoena issued against him, not for anything related to the events of January 6. He’s being persecuted as a political opponent. Bannon will receive sentencing on October 21.
