Supreme Court Blocks Texas’ Social Media Censorship Law

The law would have prevented social media companies from blocking content based on viewpoints.

The Supreme Court voted 5-4 to block Texas’ attempt to fight social media censorship. Three conservatives joined.

The law would have prevented Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media sites from blocking content based on viewpoints. It would have given Texans the ability to sue tech giants if they were banned or censored. Because of the Supreme Court’s decision, Texas won’t be able to enforce the law.

Three conservatives joined to block the law: Justices Amy Coney Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh, and Chief Justice John Roberts. Justices Neil Gorsuch, Samuel Alito, and Clarence Thomas voted against blocking the law.

The groups who filed an emergency request to block the law argued that the law would force platforms to allow “Russian propaganda” and hate speech online.
