Thanks to DeSantis, This School Year Won't Be Woke

Written by Hudson Crozier

Kids are back to school this week in Florida, and K-12 schools are adjusting to anti-woke legislation. Many teachers feel the weight of new restrictions and more parental oversight.

Because of Gov. Ron DeSantis, this school year will be different. The various laws he has passed fiercely condemn left-wing ideology and prohibit progressive teachings on race, LGBT issues, and more.

  • H.B. 1557 bans classroom instruction on gender and sexuality from kindergarten to third grade.

  • The “Stop Woke Act” prohibits teaching that anyone is “inherently racist, sexist, or oppressive” based on race, gender, or other innate characteristics.

  • With H.B. 395, DeSantis established November 7 as “Victims of Communism Day,” where students will learn about oppressive communist regimes throughout history.

The impact is already noticeable: The new anti-woke atmosphere is reportedly putting teachers on edge, causing many to change their habits with students.

  • Some are now more cautious about keeping controversial books out of classrooms.

  • Others say history lessons on racial issues will be more restrained, giving only facts and events without broader ideological narratives.

  • Most of all, teachers are more reluctant to bring up sexuality and gender in any capacity.

Why it matters: DeSantis has greatly emphasized parental rights in education, steering the Florida GOP toward his goal of eliminating radical ideology in schools. His policies seemingly work as intended, considering increased caution and scrutiny among school officials.
