Our writers are a small team of Gen Z Americans, some still in college and others early in their careers, all based in the United States.
Upward News is independent and bootstrapped. We have turned down both nonprofit donor funding and investor funding, so we have no billionaire donors, no corporate investors and no corporate or political ties. We answer to our readers.
Reader memberships and occasional sponsors pay for our work. The free newsletters carry programmatic ads, which bring in a little extra revenue. We do not take covert payments for coverage.
Disclosure: in 2025 we accepted a one-time grant from an organization to help pay for a social media manager who reposted stories we had already published. The grant carried no editorial conditions.
