_WHAT’S HAPPENING_

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) recently detained Syrian-born Mahmoud Khalil — a Palestinian activist and the spokesman for the Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD) — for his involvement in pro-Palestinian protests. Khalil was arrested under the Trump administration’s “Catch and Revoke” effort, which targets foreign nationals supporting Hamas, a US-recognized terrorist organization.

His arrest has prompted many on the political left to create a martyr of Khalil, arguing that he was arrested merely for exercising his right to free speech.

_THE FACTS_

  • Khalil acted as the negotiator for students who established a tent city on Columbia University's campus and who illegally occupied a campus building last year, in opposition to Israel’s campaign in Gaza.

  • Khalil’s movement featured pamphlets containing pro-Hamas propaganda titled "Operation Al-Aqsa Flood: Our Narrative." "Al-Aqsa Flood" is the code name used by Hamas for October 7 massacre.

  • ICE detained Khalil at his Manhattan apartment. It was reported the arrest was ordered by the State Department, which revoked his green card and student visa.

  • A New York federal judge temporarily blocked Khalil’s deportation.

  • President Trump’s executive order on combating anti-Semitism, signed in January, empowered the State Department and ICE to take action against terror-supporting students.

  • Critics on the left — and even some on the right, like Ann Coulter — have portrayed the arrest as a violation of Khalil’s First Amendment rights.

  • The Trump administration is seeking to deport Khalil under Immigration and Nationality Act Section 237(a)(4)(C), which allows deportation if an individual’s activities compromise US foreign policy interests.

  • This provision, rarely used, gives the Secretary of State broad authority to deport an alien based on their potential impact on US foreign relations, without the need for a criminal conviction.

  • The protests led by Khalil were disruptive and violent — specifically against Jewish students. Just last week, a new pro-Palestine protest took over a Columbia University library, violating students’ civil rights. The students could be heard yelling, “Burn it down.”

As a Jew, I would NOT send a child or grandchild of mine to Columbia given its harboring of hateful, violent protestors who stand for the destruction of the ONLY nation on earth for Jews and the deaths of all Israelis followed by the deaths of every Jew, people who believe Hitler was right. Those who openly state they want me dead and try to incite others to prevent Jewish students from receiving their education or to kill them should be sent back to where they come from. It is a privilege to be in the U.S. Abuse it? Leave!

I think it’s important to allow free speech, but remembering what the BLM destruction of lives and property did, those actions should have consequences and there should be restitution. Also, supporting and promoting Hamas is different than free speech.

I am confused... All these people who are so concerned about the free speech rights of Khalil - where were they when the free speech rights of thousands of American born J sixers were violated during the Biden administration?

The left makes a martyr of the pro-terrorist Muslim who supports the butchers of Oct.7 attack on Israelis and proliferates hatred against Jews. A man who parades under a flag with a slogan that basically says, "From the river to the sea, no Jews will there be", YET American Jews by and large continue to live, breathe, and Vote leftism. Dumb is not a word I'd ever use for them. but Deceived sure is.

EXCELLENT POINT! Just like "Feminists for Sharia Law" or "Queers for Islam"! Two more: "Wasps for Raid" and "Mice for DCon".

I generally oppose any restrictions on the right of free speech including censorship in the form of book bans, limits on public peaceful protests to express opposition to local, state or federal laws, or individual as well as group protestations against perceived injustice, provided that all such instances are conducted within the laws of the jurisdiction where held. However, when such public expressions of the various forms of "speech" include acts of violence as an extension of such speech, the issue is no longer an exercise of free speech but the use of free speech to promote an agenda making the freedom of speech a tool of propaganda. And propaganda, in all its various forms is nothing but advertisement which is subject to an entirely different set of rules. Khalil was not exercising "free speech", he was leading a revolt within the U.S. and should be deported for insurrection.

He and all of the people that support a pro terrorist group should be deported. I hope all of them go back to their holes in GAZA etc.

If you had a house guest start wrecking the place you would throw him out. He's a guest. Goodbye.

Those who opposed the deportation because of denying free speech seem to ignore that "free speech" doesn't include inciting unlawful acts. Khalil certainly has the right to organize a peaceful protest, but what part of taking over a facility and at the very least condoning potential violence is considered "peaceful"?

It' s a privelege for Mahmoud Khalil to be in this country. If he's going to intentionally break laws, he should be kicked out! How many conservative CITIZENS have had their 1st ammendment rights infringed upon by the media, big tech, and the left (redundant terms, I know)?

Anyone in this country on any form of visa or work-permit document that has not obtained full citizenship should be ware about supporting terrorists and/or countries that are vociferously opposed to what America stands for. If you support those organizations and/or countries then you should expect to be deported! We did not issue you a visa or work-permit in order for you to come here to threaten or trash our institutions and citizens!

I'm not a Jew but I would support Palestinians being designated a terrorist group.....not just Hamas. I think so long as one Palestinian is in Israel there will not be peace. Palestinians are trouble where ever they go. That's why the Arab nations don't want them!

Avatar

Alc Cookeville1 year ago

Exactly so! The Palestinians serve as other Muslims' virtue signals, at little cost to them. Why should they put up with these rebels in their countries when they can continue to mock the West and trouble Israel with them?

He is NOT a US Citizen!! He can be deported just on that basis alone!! He’s a violent person who has nothing but hatred for the American people so GET HIM OUT!! He doesn’t belong here. Period.

Avatar

Kevin Sargent1 year ago

Just as my freedom of movement/expression Stops at your Nose, SO does inciting to riot exceed the First Amendment protections of speech! The Left / RINOs don't accept this, because they Don't WANT to!!

Avatar

Gloria Powell1 year ago

It's beyond time. Send him from whence he came!! Add a few others to keep him company. There shouldn't even be a question of "his rights". He isn't a US Citizen he does not have the same rights that we have and he surrendered that hope when he fomented violence and supported terrorists against American's. I am so over people like him and Omar and Tlaib.

Avatar

L Pomy1 year ago

He should be deported and immediately. He does not have the right to spew his hate and have it protected under First Amendment rights as he is not an American citizen. Any judge who blocked his deportation immediately should be disbarred and taken off the bench. He is anti-American he is Anti-Semitic and he needs to leave our country.

Avatar

Coty Amen1 year ago

He doesn’t have 1st amendment rights in the US because he’s not a citizen of the USA! Don’t lose the facts by letting your emotions get in the way. He doesn’t have rights under the US constitution. What’s so hard to understand about that?!

Avatar

Stephen Winsor1 year ago

The main issue here is, he is not a citizen but thinks he can enjoy all the liberties and freedoms of a citizen. All foreign students must remember, it is a privilege to live, work and study in the U.S.A. Taking part in activities that are in ANY WAY disruptive, is grounds for removal.

Avatar

David Sells1 year ago

Totally against non citizen free speech. It opens the door to every anti America hate group in the world to come and spread there vile, violent and toxic ideologies in our country, the US of A. Those who support these hate mongerers should be deported along with them to see first hand what they are supporting. Good luck surviving. Do you think Syria, Iran, Iraq and there ilk allows free speech?

Avatar

Valerie Faddis1 year ago

He should have been deported 2 years ago! Why does he have any rights in this country, he has been a trouble maker and a law breaker? He has abused his invitation to be here.

Avatar

Sen Josh Hawley made a perfect comment about this. I agree with his statement.
