A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

Hey,

What you're about to read is a story, but it's also a warning.

There's a movement spreading across the globe. You won't see it on the news or hear it discussed on TV, and on the rare occasion it does come up, it gets waved off as a conspiracy theory. But it's real, it's political, and it's aimed squarely at the values most of us take for granted. Call it an ideology, or a marriage of convenience between two of them. Either way the goal is the same, which is to tear up our foundations and put something else in their place.

This was the force behind the Iranian Revolution, which left behind a regime now chasing nuclear weapons and vowing to destroy America. It's reshaping the politics of Europe as we speak. And unfortunately, it's here too.

(We have a lot more of this series coming, and it's slow going, because every piece takes weeks of research, editing, and back-and-forth as a team before it's ready.)

When we ran the first edition, we put it behind a paywall. The logic was simple: these pieces cost us serious time, and the hours we spend here are hours we spend away from everything else. But the feedback we heard most was that this work needs to be read by everyone. So the wall is coming down. This piece is free, and so is the rest of our American Islam series.

The ask is simple. If this work is valuable to you, whether to read or to share, please become a paid subscriber so we can keep doing it. Your support is the only thing that makes it possible. No billionaires, no investors, just you.

Thanks for reading. We're looking forward to hearing what you think.

A seemingly implausible alliance has expanded power in American politics. It is openly hostile to America’s Judeo-Christian tradition, free enterprise, and the Constitution itself.

Described as the “Red-Green Axis” — illustrated by the Reds of historic Marxism and the Greens of Islamic national flags — this new partnership merges the Democratic Party’s most radical activist networks with political Islamist organizations connected to the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

While CAIR and its allies have condemned efforts by the Trump administration and conservative states to curb Islamic influence as discrimination and “Islamophobia,” a serious investigation reveals a different, and more alarming, reality.

The Red-Green Axis no longer operates on the fringes of American politics, as witnessed by the election of Muslim and socialist Zohran Mamdani to lead America’s largest, most economically powerful city.

Indeed, the alliance provided critical support for Mamdani’s New York City mayoral bid, with endorsements from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), CAIR, the Muslim Democratic Club, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), and Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN). Back in 2017, one of the coalition’s leading strategists, Muslim activist Linda Sarsour, helped launch Mamdani’s career.

May 26, 2026, provided a clear snapshot of the partnership’s growing influence. AOC, now considered a serious 2028 presidential contender, appeared alongside fellow DSA member Zohran Mamdani to celebrate the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha.

In her speech to the all-male Muslim crowd in New York City, the progressive feminist sported a hijab, which Sharia law requires women to wear lest they be “molested,” while Mamdani, smiling behind her, wore an Arabic robe.

This piece, the second in our series on American Islam, will explain how proponents of Sharia are expanding power in America by allying with far-leftists to achieve a shared goal: to undermine the US constitutional order and replace it with the third-world values that we see eroding many once-vibrant European cultures.

This essay will explore several key questions:

  • What is the Red-Green Axis, and what shared ideological goals unite Sharia supremacists and radical leftists?

  • What are the roots of the alliance that led to its rise in modern America and the West?

  • What tactics do key players in the alliance deploy today in their efforts to gain power?

  • How does America’s current moment parallel the rise of Islam in the UK, and can the US avoid the same fate?

_WHAT IS THE RED-GREEN AXIS?_

Just two days before his assassination, Charlie Kirk warned that “woke Marxism” was fusing with Islamism in a “spiritual battle” against “the American way of life.”

Today, those studying this phenomenon must resolve what appears to be a logical contradiction regarding social issues and spiritual authority: What, precisely, do Black Lives Matter and the Democratic Socialists of America have in common with CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood?

How can progressives like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who aggressively promotes LGBT identities and “women’s rights,” ally with Sharia supremacists whose religion treats homosexuality and adultery as capital offenses?

How can some Muslims, like Zohran Mamdani, promote transgender surgeries for American children? And how do atheistic progressives find common cause with theocratic Muslims?

Collectivist, anti-Western movements have often been held together by a mutual enemy and compatible tactics. Islam and the hard Left share both:

  • Anti-Americanism: Both groups are consistently anti-imperialistic and explicitly anti-American. Sharia supremacists and radical leftists view American political traditions not as a system to be reformed but as an antiquated structure to be replaced, whether through revolutionary Marxism or “civilizational jihad.”

  • Anti-Israel: Both are openly hostile to Israel and have gone so far as to endorse genocidal proposals to eliminate the nation of Israel entirely. In 2023 and 2024, the Marxist Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) marched with the Islamic Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), chanting, “From the river to the sea, Palestine shall be free.”

  • Hatred of Judaeo-Christian civilization: Both communism and Sharia loathe Christianity, Judaism, and their combined influence on individual liberty in the Western world.

  • Perpetual warfare: Marxism asserts that a perpetual state of war exists between Marxists and capitalists that will only be resolved when global communism is achieved. Similarly, those who follow Mohammed’s warlike example believe that unrelenting jihad must be waged against non-Muslims until Dar al-Salaam (the “world peace” of Sharia law) is finally attained through the global caliphate.

  • “Victimhood” narrative: While Marxists portray themselves as oppressed by the capitalist “bourgeoisie,” Islamists depict themselves as victims of “Islamophobia” and “colonialism.” These narratives aim to guilt-trip Western societies into weakening themselves through open borders policies and a generous welfare state.

  • Pro-totalitarian: Both groups routinely express solidarity with authoritarian regimes and terrorist groups such as China, Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, and Hamas.

  • Migration as a weapon: While many in today’s Democratic Party support open borders as a means to weaken national identity, Islamists promote mass immigration (Hirjah) and reject assimilation to advance their “civilizational jihad.” Incidentally, the United Nations has advanced this agenda by supporting Muslim immigration into Europe and America through its Human Settlement Policy.

  • Cultural conquest: Both have demonstrated a decades-long preference for covert institutional infiltration, especially when military action is less effective. The Muslim Brotherhood’s “civilizational jihad” is reflective of Marxism’s “long march through the institutions” inspired by leftist Antonio Gramsci and the Frankfurt School, and advocated by the American Left for over a century.

  • Advance by deception: Communist China and the Soviet Union were both accused of violating multiple treaties, following the guidance of Vladimir Lenin, who reportedly stated, “Treaties are like pie crusts, made to be broken.” Similarly, the Islamic doctrine of Taqiyya allows for Muslims to lie or hide their faith if it advances the cause of Islam.

  • Embrace of political violence: Leftists like Hasan Piker have called to instigate violent Marxist revolution and murder people in the streets, in an apparent endorsement of the violent socialism that killed over 100 million people in the 20th century. Radical Muslims emphasize that theirs is a religion of peace, despite notable realities: Muslim nations make up a majority of countries in which Christians are persecuted today, and Islam violently conquered Christian lands and churches, beginning in 622 AD.

Taken together, these commonalities represent a unified ideology called Islamo-gauchisme, or Islamo-leftism. This dual worldview can coordinate political action while tolerating serious disagreement about the end vision — a global caliphate versus worldwide socialism.

Indeed, these disagreements have resulted in bloody confrontations between Islamists and Marxists. For instance, the 1979 Iranian revolution was made possible by a wide array of Islamic and Marxist interests that coalesced against Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who, incidentally, had already faced pressure from President Jimmy Carter’s administration.

Support for Ayatollah Khomeini came not only from Islamic fundamentalists, but also from the pro-Soviet Tudeh Party, Marxist guerrilla groups, the Islamist-Marxist Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK), and leftist student organizations and newspapers, which lauded Khomeini’s message of “freedom” and “anti-imperialism.”

However, following the monarchy’s collapse and Khomeini’s return from exile, Islamists swiftly consolidated total religious and political power. A brutal crackdown on Marxism, feminism, and secularism ensued: universities were purged of non-Islamic thought, the Tudeh Party was dismantled, and tens of thousands of militant leftists who helped topple the Shah were executed.

The modern American Left, which seems to detest Christianity and the constitutional order more than it fears political Islam, ignores this warning at its own peril.

_THE ROOTS OF THE ALLIANCE_

The Nazis

In 1928, just five years before Adolf Hitler and his Nazis assumed power in Germany, a 22-year-old Egyptian cleric named Hassan al-Banna founded the Society of Brothers (the Muslim Brotherhood).

While al-Banna did not reject violent jihad (his followers later assassinated multiple Arab leaders), what he wanted most of all was gradual civilizational jihad — the long-term infiltration and takeover of Western institutions through immigration, institutional infiltration, and politics.

When Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany, al-Banna came to see the Nazi Party’s strong militarism and open antisemitism as a model for his own nascent movement.

He patterned the Brotherhood’s organization and propaganda methods on the Nazi Party, corresponded with Adolf Hitler, and copied an Arabic adaptation of Mein Kampf, fittingly titled My Jihad.

The relationship expanded during World War II, when Brotherhood member Amin al-Husseini, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, traveled to Berlin to meet with Hitler personally, helped recruit Balkan Muslims for the Waffen-SS, and praised Hitler’s genocide of European Jews as civilizational progress.

The Soviets

Two decades after Hitler’s death, a new sponsor emerged in the form of the Soviet Union. How, some may ask, could political Islam replace an alliance with Nazism for a later collaboration with Germany’s most bitter foe of World War II?

While the Soviets had initially supported the fledgling state of Israel, they soon turned against it after aligning itself with the Western world. With Islamists, they found a new ally in their Cold War struggle.

According to Ion Mihai Pacepa — the highest-ranking Soviet bloc intelligence officer ever to defect to the West — the KGB played a critical role in the creation of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), founded in 1964.

Pacepa testified that Soviet funding and weapons transfers built up the new Palestinian movement. If his claims are accurate, then the Soviets indirectly birthed even more terror: Hamas' 1988 founding charter explicitly recognizes itself as an offshoot of the PLO.

Pacepa also testified that KGB chairman Yuri Andropov, in the 1970s, dispatched around 4,000 agents of influence into the Muslim world, with plans to foment violence against Israel and the United States. Radical mosques and activist networks in Western Europe were cultivated by this initiative, he claimed.

All the while, the Soviet regime utilized the sizable Muslim population within its own borders, sending Muslim Soviet ambassadors to Islamic nations, and using Muslim clerics in the Soviet Union to bolster its legitimacy in the broader Islamic world.

After the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, a weakened Russia pivoted to controlling its Islamic population through state-run Spiritual Administrations of Muslims, while, according to defector Alexander Litvinenko, simultaneously sponsoring terror networks and backing Saddam Hussein to undermine the West.

Before Russian intelligence allegedly poisoned him with polonium-210 in 2006, Litvinenko made his most explosive claim: that Ayman al-Zawahiri, Osama bin Laden's deputy, had trained at an FSB facility in Dagestan in 1998.

Washington

A third stage in this story strikes closer to home, inside Washington, DC. In 1994, one of America’s most influential Islamic groups, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, was established. Despite being linked to both the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas, CAIR’s influence only increased in government and civic institutions.

CAIR was able to mobilize the increasing number of Muslim immigrants that had arrived following the 1965 passage of the bipartisan Immigration and Nationality Act, a wave that continued following the September 11, 2001, terror attacks.

The Obama years, some conservatives have argued, allowed radical Islamic groups to shape security policy in disastrous ways. Over FBI objections, the Obama administration removed the Muslim Brotherhood from terror watchlists, engaged CAIR’s advice on proposals to combat “discrimination” against radical Muslims, and decoupled all discussion of Islamic doctrine from terrorism in Department of Homeland Security training.

During the Arab Spring, President Obama demanded the resignation of America’s longtime ally, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, a move that paved the way for the Muslim Brotherhood to seize power.

Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran, which unfroze tens of billions in assets, funded its terrorist proxies across the region. And under President Biden’s administration, Islamic terrorists exploited the open Southern Border while the Taliban seized $85 billion of US weaponry left in Afghanistan.

What became absolutely clear is that America’s left-leaning politics directly emboldened Islamists around the globe.

_HOW THEY’RE AT WORK TODAY_

In Politics

According to Congressional testimony, the Muslim Brotherhood coordinates a loose network of roughly 8,000 non-profits across the US, supporting a parallel Islamic institutional network of mosques, schools, media, and political organizations. In some instances, these leftist and Islamic groups work directly together.

In Michigan, former state health director Abdul El-Sayed – who once lavished praise on the Muslim Brotherhood – has emerged as the Democratic frontrunner for US Senate by appealing to both progressive and Islamic voters. His backers include Sen. Bernie Sanders, radical Palestinian-American activist Linda Sarsour, and Muslim-Marxist online influencer Hasan Piker.

In New Jersey, a leftist-Islamic coalition propelled Dr. Adam Hisham Hamawy, an Egyptian-born surgeon with former ties to Al Qaeda and the “Blind Sheik” who carried out the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, to victory in the Democratic primary for the state’s 12th Congressional district. During his victory party, Hamawy called on his followers to repeat, “Allahu Akhbar.”

In New York City, Brad Lander, who has the strong support of and shares the same radical politics as Mayor Mamdani, holds a commanding polling lead over incumbent Democratic Rep. Dan Goldman.

In Texas, the Soros-backed Sunrise Movement partnered with an Islamic PAC to advance Muslim candidates for city council.

In Education

Besides politics, higher education is where the battle for the next generation is fought. Marxist intellectuals understood this for over 100 years, and their Islamic allies grasp this reality as well. With funding from Qatar, Brown University’s social studies program now reaches an estimated 1 million+ students across 8,000 schools.

Brown’s curriculum, shaped with the help of Hamas-linked Professor Beshara Doumani, has framed Middle Eastern Jews as colonizers and Muslims as persecuted indigenous people, downplaying Iran’s sponsorship of terror, and sympathizing with Hamas and Hezbollah as “resistance movements.”

The Left and Islam are reshaping student activism as well. Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) operates chapters on over 200 American campuses, and its parent body, American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), has been tied to former officials of the Holy Land Foundation, which the US government shut down in 2001 for funneling millions of dollars to Hamas.

SJP chapters have organized joint encampments with the Democratic Socialists of America at dozens of universities, including Columbia and the University of California Los Angeles, transforming America’s most elite schools into hotbeds of activism, or something worse.

In Law

The legal system has provided another avenue for cooperation, with CAIR maintaining a long-standing partnership with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

The two groups have allied to challenge FBI surveillance of California mosques, contested Texas Governor Greg Abbott's (R) executive orders on immigration enforcement, and push back against university policies they claim are suppressing the rights of pro-Palestinian student activists.

In Religion

Stranger coalitions are at work too, seeking to accommodate left-wing Christianity to fit within an Islamic religious framework. The Interfaith Alliance, for example, has set forth a program of Christian-Muslim theological reconciliation.

One of its initiatives called to confront “Islamophobia in the church” by weaving “Islamic scripture into the lectionary calendar.” A Chicago affiliate spearheaded a “Reading the Qur’an in Churches” campaign. While some would present these initiatives as good-faith ecumenism, others see the alliance as a tool to expand Islamic influence

Some Muslim apologists have also argued that Muslims love Jesus, or Isa, as they call him. This claim was even propagated by Tucker Carlson.

However, Muslim teaching holds Jesus as a mere prophet — certainly not a divine figure — and denies the doctrine of the resurrection. Christians who hold the Biblical view are routinely slaughtered by Islamic terrorists who follow the Quran’s command to “kill the polytheists.”

A Deliberate Plan

Across multiple fronts, leftist-Islamist coordination appears to be deliberate. Nihad Awad, the Hamas-linked executive director of CAIR, has articulated his vision for Islamic institutional dominance in American life in specific terms.

He has called for 50 Muslim members of Congress in six years. He believes that in just 15 years, American mosques can support 50,000 Muslim attorneys, 50,000 journalists, 50,000 filmmakers, and 50,000 political influencers — an elite force to reshape the cultural and political landscape from within.

His agenda, ambitious and patient, is reminiscent of that first envisioned by Hassan Al-Banna nearly a century ago.

Thus far, the Left appears willing to partner with efforts from Awad and others that will, if successful, transform America into something entirely foreign to its tradition of liberty.

_AVOIDING BRITAIN’S FATE_

The British precedent provides a sobering warning for America. For over two decades, Muslim Brotherhood-linked networks partnered with leftists to expand power in major British cities, electing members of Parliament and local councilors, and effectively dismissing accusations of migrant crime, rape, and cultural collision as racism.

While America is following the same trajectory, it is roughly a decade behind, as illustrated by two elections: Sadiq Khan’s election as London mayor in May 2016 and Zohran Mamdani’s election to lead New York City in November 2025.

Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), founder of the Sharia Free Caucus, has framed the UK’s “massive Islamic takeover” as an urgent warning to the US. Roy also believes America’s spiritual survival itself is at stake: “The march of Islam is real. We've got people in this country that are now wanting us to stop ringing church bells in favor of having Muslim prayer calls pointing towards Mecca.”

_SOLUTIONS_

Today’s Red-Green Axis is not a fringe movement to be ignored. It is occupying the largest city in America. It is winning over young people through social media and the campuses of the most prestigious universities. It is rapidly gaining power within the Democratic Party. Mosque by mosque and campus chapter by campus chapter, it is expanding the institutional infrastructure needed for long-term dominance.

There is time left to avoid the UK’s fate, but only if American leaders dismantle anti-American NGOs like CAIR and the SPLC, denaturalize and deport Islamist and Marxist leaders who openly seek to destroy America — including Imams who preach Sharia law – and severely curtail both legal and illegal migration.

Reversing the spread of Islam will require replacing the hyper-individualist “free love” ideology of the 1960s cultural revolution with the vibrant spiritual values and family life that once formed the bedrock of American society.

It will also necessitate that parents reclaim the educational formation of their children from Islamist and Marxist educators.

Most critically, it will demand rejecting not just atheistic progressivism, but what some have called “Doormat Christianity,” a modern theology that effectively calls for Christians to permanently accommodate to the evil forces that wish to destroy their civilization.

The Red-Green Axis poses a grave challenge to America, but there is still time to choose a different path — one rooted in freedom and confidence in the civilization that makes the West great.
