WHAT WE'RE WATCHING
ā Ā Senate Republicans are pushing Democrats to allow votes on Trumpās nominees. The White House has sent dozens of nominees to the Senate, but Democrats have ensured that approval has moved at a glacial pace. Not a single civilian nominee has been confirmed via voice vote or unanimous consent for the first time in decades. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has threatened to cancel the August recess if Democrats do not speed things up.
šµĀ Kamala Harris wonāt run for governor of California. The former vice president and Democratic nominee broke the news earlier this week and shortly thereafter announced a presidential campaign memoir highlighting her 107-day 2024 campaign. In an interview with Stephen Colbert, however, she refused to rule out a second presidential campaign in 2028.
š°Ā Trump has hundreds of millions saved for 2026. President Trumpās super PAC and leadership PAC have a combined $234 million on-hand to spend in races across the country next year. This does not include funds held by the National Republican Congressional Committee or other aligned groups. The groups can spend money freely anywhere in the US in both primary elections and general elections.
š¤ Ā Texas is redrawing its House map ahead of 2026. After weeks of discussions, the Texas legislature revealed a new map which, when passed, will give Republicans five extra seats in the House of Representatives via new congressional district boundaries. Each new seat will be solidly conservative, giving the GOP a boost in a tight midterm election. Similar efforts in Ohio will also likely net the GOP seats.
