WHAT WE'RE WATCHING

💥 Elon Musk went nuclear on President Trump. In a series of X posts yesterday, the former DOGE leader blasted President Trump and the Big, Beautiful Bill — but also went much further. Musk also claimed that Trump would have lost in 2024 without his help, that the president was showing “ingratitude,” that Trump should be impeached, and that Trump was implicated in the Epstein files. This morning, the president called Musk “the man who has lost his mind" and said he was "not particularly" interested in talking to him, though Musk supposedly wants to talk to Trump.
🚫 Trump issued a new travel ban. Citizens of 12 countries — including Afghanistan, Chad, Haiti, and Iran — are now banned from entering the United States, with seven other countries receiving partial restrictions. The move mirrors his ban from his first term, which was ultimately upheld by the Supreme Court in 2018. However, that legal process took nearly a year and a half. In the hopes of avoiding another legal go-around, the administration spent the last five months crafting this one.
✂️ The White House asked Congress to cut nearly $10 billion. The proposal, called a rescissions package, cannot be blocked by a filibuster. The package includes over $1 billion in cuts to PBS and NPR, but the bulk — over $8.3 billion — is from USAID. Republicans in Congress will have 45 days to pass the cuts. While they have the numbers on paper, moderate Republicans like Sen. Susan Collins (ME) have balked at some cuts to foreign aid programs, making passage uncertain.
💰 Republican senators are shooting for $2 trillion in spending cuts. After a meeting at the White House, Republican Senate leadership said they wanted to go further than the House-passed version of Trump’s reconciliation bill. However, senators also want to cut less from Medicaid and do not want to lift the SALT tax cap as high as the House did — differences which will need to be ironed out, as the final bill will have to be passed by the House again.

Trump rebuilds the conservative legal movement

WHAT’S HAPPENING
The Federalist Society, a 70,000-member organization, has been the backbone of the conservative legal movement for decades. The group has worked to foster and grow conservative legal minds, preparing many for judgeships, justiceships, and helping to build legal cases in support of gun rights and against abortion…
