WHAT WE'RE WATCHING

💥 Trump to give explosive primetime address. Two White House officials reported that the Thursday speech will cover newly declassified intelligence on foreign election interference in 2020. CIA Director Ratcliffe, FBI Director Patel, and other intelligence chiefs will reportedly join him. A Washington Reporter claims Trump may also declare Georgia's two Democrat senators illegitimate due to fraud.

🏛️ Lindsey Graham's sister appointed to fill his seat. South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster (R) appointed Darline Graham Nordone to replace her late brother after President Trump pushed for the pick on Truth Social. She'll serve through January while Republicans scramble to protect their fragile majority.

👀 Democrat who vetted Platner also accused of sexual misconduct. Daniel Moraff, the strategist who recruited disgraced Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner, was reportedly barred from Rep. Summer Lee's (D-PA) 2022 congressional campaign after multiple sexual harassment complaints.

🔥 Anti-ICE protesters storm Susan Collins' office. Following an ICE-involved shooting in Maine that killed a 26-year-old Colombian man, agitators descended on the senator's office, where one protester struck a journalist with a skateboard. Sen. Angus King (I-ME) claimed the victim was not the target of the warrant, but ICE officers were pursuing someone else.

ASK THE EDITORS

How does Iran still have military capabilities?

Q: “How is Iran striking back? I thought their military was decimated, but clearly that's not the case.” — Kristina from Massachusetts

A: Though we may hear one story from Washington, it’s not true that Iran's military has been totally decimated. Iran still maintains an enormous military with hundreds of thousands of personnel, vast missile inventories, drone swarms, and underground facilities that are tricky to eliminate completely.

Russia and China are also helping Iran restock drones, missile components, anti-ship weapons, and more through back-channel networks that the US can’t fully choke off.

On top of that, the regime uses what's called a "mosaic defense" strategy, which means that instead of a centralized military that can be taken out in a few big airstrikes, they spread their weapons and command structures across dozens of dispersed locations. And Iran is a big country. That's how they're still able to launch missile and drone strikes on American bases in Bahrain and Kuwait and keep causing trouble in the Strait of Hormuz even after taking hits.

Degrading Iran's military is one thing, but totally destroying it is another. That would require a commitment far beyond anything the US has undertaken so far.
