A: In short, this is a trade war, and the fight is shaped by the Trump Administration's efforts to restart their tariff strategy after the Supreme Court shut down their previous one.

The administration says Canada treats America worse than everyone else: EU exporters get better cheese quotas, provinces boycott U.S. booze while restricting no other country, and Canada's retaliatory auto tariffs hit American vehicles alone.

Ottawa says Washington is asking for too much, adding last-minute terms cutting tariff relief for Canadian-made vehicles, restricting Canada's ability to strike deals with other countries, and weakening protections for language, culture and sovereignty.

Why so much hostility? President Trump still wants to use tariffs in his global efforts to restrain China, and to fix trade imbalances, and if he loses with his Canadian neighbors, other countries wouldn't take it seriously.

If I'm guessing, the antagonism will only grow. Canada is much more progressive — no second amendment, strict hate-speech laws, earlier same-sex marriage laws, much more secular — while America's conservative movement is much stronger. (Though it's worth noting they're converging in one place: Canadian opinion on immigration has flipped hard.)

Plus, Canadians are mostly upset about the jokes American politicians make about annexation... Trigger warning for Canadian readers: In the grand scheme of history, I'd bet it's unlikely that Canada isn't annexed in the next hundred years.
