WHAT WE'RE WATCHING

🤝 Senate Democrats near shutdown deal. A handful of Senate Democrats signaled they are ready to advance a package of bills to end the government shutdown. The proposal includes spending measures, short-term funding, and a December vote on ACA tax credits. Many on the Left, in response, have gone ballistic over Democrats “caving.”
💸 Trump pledges $2,000 tariff dividend payout. President Trump pledged a $2,000 dividend to most Americans from tariff revenue. This promise aims to galvanize public support for his tariff policies, which recently faced a Supreme Court challenge.
⚖️ Supreme Court sides with Trump on food stamp funding. The Supreme Court blocked a lower court order demanding full food stamp payments amid the government shutdown. The Trump administration had used emergency funds for partial payments, arguing Congress’s inaction caused the shortfall, not the White House.

Republicans shift gears after election blowouts

_WHAT’S HAPPENING_
Following decisive Democratic victories in Virginia, New Jersey, and New York City, President Donald Trump and top Republicans are scrambling to adjust their message: “It’s the economy, stupid.”
_FACTS AND INSIGHTS_
President Trump admitted his party was blindsided, saying Republicans "don't talk about the word affordability."

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Republicans face sweeping election losses
Last week, we asked our members to send in their thoughts on the 2025 elections — why Republicans lost, where they go from here, and what this means for Trump and the GOP. Here’s what you had to say:
The Republican Party is somewhat fractured, and Trump has focused his efforts on tariffs and foreign policy, not domestic issues (e.g., inflation, the shutdown). While he does a lot, the press coverage may come across as if he is disengaged with the so-called blue-collar voter — and maybe rightfully so.
All this feeds the narrative that sets up a pretty easy victory for someone promising "free" stuff. This isn't a surprise to me.

Young Americans have not been taught history. If they had been taught and shown the difference between capitalism and communism, these elections would not have happened.

Probably the least surprising outcome was a Marxist becoming the next mayor of NYC. The one that truly disappoints me is Virginia. It's a swing state, so going back and forth on the governor makes sense. But Jay Jones winning his race to become the head of all law enforcement for Virginia, after wishing his colleague’s wife and children would be murdered, just sucks.
— Nathan in Missouri
Last week’s Democratic sweep was clearly an anti-Trump vote. Although I believe President Trump has done very well during his first 10 months in office, his popularity is declining rapidly.
The “Trump effect” has run out of gas. And there may be a good reason. Groceries are still high, which is the most obvious, and his autocratic attitude doesn’t help.
