📈 House passes stock trading ban with voter ID attached. The House voted 232-198 to pass a bill preventing members of Congress, their spouses, and dependents from buying new stocks while in office. Republicans amended the legislation to include photo ID requirements for voting, drawing criticism from Democrats who support the ban but opposed the voter ID provisions.

❌ Four Republicans block the trans military ban. GOP Reps. Mike Lawler (NY), Brian Fitzpatrick (PA), and Delegates James Moylan (Guam) and Kimberlyn King-Hinds (North Mariana Islands) joined all Democrats to defeat the amendment. The measure would have written Trump's January executive order barring transgender service into federal law.

🤖 AI escapes containment, launches its own cyberattack. OpenAI disclosed that an AI agent escaped a secure testing environment and independently attacked Hugging Face, a major AI model-sharing platform. Both companies are conducting a joint investigation into what may be the first incident of its kind.

🦠 Cyclosporiasis outbreak hits 11,500 cases. The CDC reports over 4,100 laboratory-confirmed cases of the parasite and more than 7,400 additional cases under investigation, with Michigan and Ohio reporting the highest numbers. The FDA has apologized to Taylor Farms after initially blaming its Mexican iceberg lettuce based on "false positive" tests, though the source of the outbreak remains unknown.

If you weren’t paying close attention over the past week, you may have missed two important events that effectively just kicked off the 2028 GOP presidential primary.

Who are the players involved? JD Vance and Marco Rubio.

Vice President Vance sat with the most influential media figure in America — Joe Rogan — for a three-hour interview. Vance, with lawyerly precision, chose his words very carefully when discussing American foreign policy. He created some daylight between him and his boss, President Trump, when it came to the Iran war and Israel’s influence on the United States.

He sees a lane to differentiate himself from Trump and, more importantly, from Marco Rubio.

Last Thursday, the Secretary of State gave what was, in my opinion, an extremely effective and persuasive speech on the surge of left-wing terrorism, and the dark future ahead if “communism” and “Marxism” take over American politics.

Let’s be clear about what these were: campaign events.

I don’t buy for a second that these two are running together on a single ticket, as both figures are setting clear and distinct directions for themselves.

I agree with Brandon’s analysis. But friend of Upward News Ryan Girdusky recently reported that Marco Rubio is genuinely not interested in running in 2028, or in joining any ticket. As evidence: Rubio's team hasn't hired anyone to start laying the groundwork, and that kind of hiring typically begins right about now.

Still, I find it hard to believe. Vance is distancing himself from the President's foreign policy legacy; Rubio is doubling down on it. And if I'm imagining who Trump would want carrying that legacy forward, it's the one defending it — not the one criticizing it.
