A: Overall, not too much. The overall deficit narrowed just slightly, from $904 billion in 2024 to $901 billion in 2025. Improving the deficit matters because it represents wealth and manufacturing capacity flowing overseas instead of funding American jobs and industry at home.

Worse, the deficit in physical goods like machinery and electronics — what the tariffs were supposed to fix — hit a record $1.24 trillion, driven by a surge in computer chip imports for the AI boom.

One win is that the trade gap with China shrank nearly 32 percent to its smallest level in 20 years, but that mostly just diverted to more friendly countries, with the gaps with Vietnam and Taiwan ballooning by 44 percent and 99 percent, respectively.

The problem with blanket tariffs is that they punish imports broadly without targeting the industries America actually needs to rebuild. Targeted tariffs aimed at reindustrialization, protecting sectors like semiconductors and advanced manufacturing, would do far more to close the deficit than a blunt instrument that just reshuffles who we trade with.
