Protests explode in Mexico over cartel control

Protesters — many of whom were Generation Z — clashed violently with police in Mexico City on Saturday as thousands demonstrated against government corruption and cartel violence. The protests left at least 120 people injured, with 100 police officers requiring medical attention after being attacked with hammers, chains, and fireworks.
_THE FACTS_
Before the protests, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum erected a wall around the presidential palace.
Protesters breached the barriers, dragging officers and attacking them with hammers, chains, and fireworks.
Twenty protesters were arrested, and another twenty cited for administrative offenses.
Demonstrators shouted, “Carlos did not die, the government killed him,” referencing slain Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo.
Manzo was assassinated on November 1 after accusing President Sheinbaum of protecting cartels and rejecting help from President Donald Trump.
At least 87 mayors were killed by cartels during the term of Mexico’s previous president, a trend which has continued into Sheinbaum’s term.
Sheinbaum refused President Donald Trump’s offer of US military assistance, saying Mexico would “never accept” the presence of the US Army.
Protesters accused Sheinbaum’s Morena party of being financed by cartel money and shielding traffickers from prosecution.
_OUR INSIGHTS _
The unrest in Mexico City points to a deeper crisis than anger over crime. One Mexican senator is warning that the country is sliding into a “narco-state” under President Claudia Sheinbaum, alleging cartels bankroll Morena politicians in exchange for protection. The assassination of anti-cartel mayor Carlos Manzo is viewed as evidence of that pact.
This backdrop also sharpens Trump’s earlier offer of US help. His administration has floated kinetic strikes in Mexico and Venezuela before, and a worsening cartel-government alliance could give him cause for military intervention.
