Elon Musk’s Messy MAGA Breakup
Musk lambasted Republicans for supporting Trump’s Big, Beautiful Bill, alienating himself in the process.

_WHAT’S HAPPENING_
Elon Musk torched President Donald Trump’s signature “One Big, Beautiful Bill” this week, calling it a “disgusting abomination” and accusing Republicans of betraying their principles.
His post on X caught Trump’s advisers off guard and triggered immediate backlash from GOP leaders. Musk’s criticism centered on the bill’s spending levels, also calling out the removal of electric vehicle tax credits, which directly affect his businesses.
_THE FACTS_
In further posts, Musk warned the bill would balloon the national debt and argued it would undermine the work of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought countered Musk, claiming the bill “lowers the deficit by $1.4 trillion” over ten years.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) described Musk’s opposition as “very disappointing” and “terribly wrong.”
The bill phases out electric vehicle tax credits, which Tesla, headed up by Musk, had reportedly spent nearly a quarter of a million dollars lobbying to preserve.
The White House hit back at Musk’s claims with a fact sheet, arguing the bill only increases the deficit if the Trump tax cuts expire.
They also pointed out that, under reconciliation rules, the bill can’t cut most government spending — that’s reserved for a budget bill.
The Trump administration is reportedly frustrated with Musk’s interference, as Congress has just a month to pass the bill before their July 4 deadline.
House Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) echoed Musk’s debt concerns, calling the bill a “debt bomb ticking.”
A recent poll indicates that 78 percent of Trump-aligned voters support the bill.
