Harvard Vows No Surrender to Trump’s Demands
The Ivy League school drew a red line as billions in funding hang in the balance.

_WHAT’S HAPPENING_
Harvard University is mounting a full-scale resistance as the Trump administration ramps up its crackdown on campus antisemitism.
America’s most prominent university rejected a series of demands from the Trump administration, including eliminating diversity programs, overhauling departments accused of fostering antisemitism, and implementing federal oversight on hiring and admissions.
Harvard President Alan Garber declared the university would not "surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights," marking the first major university to directly challenge Trump's attempts to reform higher education. The administration responded by threatening Harvard's tax-exempt status and warning of additional funding cuts.
_THE FACTS_
Harvard received an "unauthorized" letter from the White House's antisemitism task force on April 11, containing extensive demands regarding university operations.
The demands included the adoption of merit-based hiring and admissions practices, reforming programs with “egregious” antisemitism, and stronger rules for student discipline.
Federal demands also included reporting international students committing campus violations.
Although the letter was unauthorized — presumably meaning it was not cleared with the president — the White House is standing by it.
The letter followed up on and dramatically expanded demands laid out in a previous letter sent to Harvard on April 3.
Harvard, which had reportedly been willing to use the April 3 letter as a starting point, firmly rejected all demands in the April 11 letter, arguing that it went too far in restricting university independence.
In response to Harvard’s refusal of the terms in the April 11 letter, the Trump administration froze $2.3 billion in Harvard's federal funding.
President Trump threatened an additional $1 billion funding cut targeting health research, and is now threatening Harvard’s tax-exempt status.
Harvard is suing the Trump administration for using funding cuts as “leverage” in an unlawful “pressure campaign.”
