Trump’s Pick for FBI Director Poses a Threat to the Left
Kash Patel is dedicated to dismantling the deep state, worrying Democrats and federal bureaucrats.
President-elect Donald Trump’s nomination of Kash Patel as the next director of the FBI is another bold move in his efforts to reform federal agencies plagued by scandal and restore public trust in America’s law enforcement institutions.
Trump initially considered appointing Patel as deputy FBI director, a role not requiring Senate approval, but ultimately chose to nominate him as director, setting up a potentially uphill confirmation process.
In the first Trump administration, CIA Director Gina Haspel threatened to quit over Patel being considered for deputy director of the FBI, and former Attorney General Bill Barr apparently remarked, “over my dead body” to the suggestion.
Patel’s career has been defined by his work exposing corruption from within the federal bureaucracy. As a congressional staffer, Patel was instrumental in uncovering FBI misconduct during the Russia investigation, helping draft the memo distributed by former Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), which revealed that partisan and questionable sources were used to justify surveillance of Trump campaign aide Carter Page.
Patel also served as a senior official in Trump’s first term, holding roles such as chief of staff at the Department of Defense and deputy director of National Intelligence, where he played a critical role in counterterrorism efforts, including the Army raid that took out ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
The left’s disdain for Patel stems mainly from his involvement in criticizing FBI conduct and the "deep state.” The left also doesn’t approve of Patel’s claims that the 2020 election was rigged against Trump and accuse him of promoting conspiracy theories on Truth Social during his time as a board member of the company.
Patel’s path to confirmation may be rocky. Given his controversial record and the partisan divide in Washington, Democrats are likely to oppose his nomination fiercely. Whether he secures confirmation or not, Patel’s nomination underscores Trump’s commitment to dismantling the politically scandalous elements of the FBI that ultimately targeted him and many right-leaning Americans.
