Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) lost his primary race on Tuesday to Trump-backed challenger Ed Gallrein, a retired Navy SEAL and farmer, in the most expensive House primary in American history. Massie lost by a resounding 10-point margin.

The race became a referendum on Massie's independent streak, as he repeatedly voted against President Donald Trump's priorities and broke with the Republican caucus, specifically bucking on releasing the Epstein files and the administration’s foreign policy, especially involving Israel.

Trump turned on Massie last year and successfully mobilized his political operation to unseat the fiscal hawk who first rode the Tea Party wave to Congress in 2012.
