Six Republican-led states are sending over 1,000 National Guard troops to Washington, DC, as President Donald Trump escalates his federal takeover of law enforcement in the nation's capital.

Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Ohio, South Carolina, and West Virginia are deploying troops to join the 800 DC National Guard members already patrolling the city.

This escalated clampdown comes as the nation’s capital struggles with sky-high violent crime, spurring the president to call for a “Liberation Day” to “rescue our nation's capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam and squalor.”
