Alex Jones is on the Verge of Losing Infowars
After losing an unprecedented defamation case, Jones was forced to sell his media company to the highest bidder.
The satirical left-leaning outlet The Onion has officially tried to acquire Alex Jones’ media company, Infowars. Now, one of the internet’s most infamous conspiracy theory hubs may soon be relaunching as a parody site.
Though the sale was supposedly final, on Friday, a judge intervened to pause the sale, and will audit the auction to ensure it was conducted fairly.
The Onion’s parent company, Global Tetrahedron, secured Infowars in a bankruptcy auction supported by families of the Sandy Hook school shooting victims, who have sought to end Jones’ platform after he repeatedly called the tragedy a hoax.
Infowars’ downfall began with lawsuits in 2018, when families of Sandy Hook victims sued Jones for defamation, arguing his claims fueled harassment, threats, and trauma as followers confronted them, believing the murdered children and teachers were actually “crisis actors.”
In 2022, the families won an unprecedented $1.4 billion judgment against Jones, who subsequently declared bankruptcy. Infowars and other assets of Jones’ parent company, Free Speech Systems, were ordered by a Texas judge to be auctioned off, ultimately leading to The Onion’s acquisition.
With the launch of a rebranded Infowars, The Onion aims to poke fun at the website’s former conspiratorial tone, hoping to mock fringe internet personalities like Jones, according to Global Tetrahedron’s CEO, Ben Collins.
Many Infowars loyalists see the sale as part of a larger attempt to silence dissenting voices. Jones himself, who announced the news in a defiant video, accused The Onion and “Connecticut Democrats” of aiming to "shut down" conservative speech. Jones said that until he saw a court order, he would not wind down his operation.
The left, and even many on the right, view The Onion’s acquisition as a major success, taking down somebody they have long hated in the media space. While Jones’ platform will remain, it will now exist to ruthlessly mock him and his followers.
