_WHAT’S HAPPENING_

Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta continues to grapple with the aftermath of a migrant invasion in late July that saw 80,000 Moroccans storm in.

As Spanish and Moroccan authorities work to secure the border against potential repeat crossings, reports of violent crime and sexual assault have skyrocketed.

_THE FACTS_

  • The Spanish Guardia Civil has confirmed 15 rapes registered in Ceuta, though the number of unconfirmed cases is likely much higher.

  • The most recent incident under investigation involved three individuals allegedly caught attempting to sexually abuse a 10-year-old girl.

  • A distressed Spanish mother said, “My 16-year-old daughter has to go everywhere with her father or with me because the migrants devour her.”

  • A Ceuta doctor stated, “I don't know what diseases I'm bringing home. I can't even take my dog for a walk. Every day we receive reports of girls who have been raped."

  • Spanish counterterrorism officers identified at least ten people previously expelled over jihadism-related offenses who entered during the invasion.

  • Local physicians have reported treating cases of stab wounds, broken noses, scabies, and sexual assault on minors.

  • At least 96 people died during the mass migration event.

  • Approximately 5,000 to 10,000 migrants remain in Ceuta.

  • Hundreds of remaining migrants staged a protest demanding immediate asylum benefits, including food, shelter, and freedom of movement to mainland Spain.

_OUR TAKE_

Spain’s socialist government is uniquely unequipped to handle this crisis. Spanish Health Minister Mónica García dismissed claims of the healthcare system collapsing in Ceuta as "xenophobic," even as emergency room physicians describe scenes "straight out of hell.”

At the end of the day, it’s hard to see why socialists would oppose such a takeover; many consider freedom of movement a “human right,” while the idea of a European territory connected to Morocco is seen as a relic of colonialism. Ceuta and the rest of Spain may just have to open their arms to thousands of new citizens.
