The Democratic Party is Mostly Upscale Whites, New Poll Finds

A new poll conducted by The New York Times reveals a significant political realignment. It isn’t a surprise either. Here’s what the poll shows.

Democrats do better with college-educated whites than they do with nonwhites now. This is a massive blow after the party has spent the last decade building a coalition of Black voters and trying to frame the Republican party as racist.

Democrats have left the working class behind and are now the party of diploma-holding voters concerned about progressive issues—like gun control, abortion, diversity, and inclusion. It hasn’t been that long since Obama’s 2008 campaign positioned Democrats as the working class party.

Trump-era Republicans, on the other hand, have rapidly built a robust multiracial coalition of working-class voters. Candidates for House Republicans this year are also the most diverse in history. In 2020, Trump received up to 35% of the Latino vote, according to exit polls. That number will be even higher going forward.
