The Media Goes Silent On Doug Emhoff Abuse Allegations
The accusations against the second gentleman may have come to light too close to the election for the media to investigate.
Doug Emhoff was accused of physically assaulting a former girlfriend, claims backed by multiple witnesses and corroborating documents
Despite the gravity of the claims, major media outlets have largely ignored the story
Recent and former accusations against Emhoff challenge his cultivated image as a champion for women
The story
Serious accusations have surfaced against Doug Emhoff, husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, accusing him of physically assaulting a former girlfriend during a high-profile event in Cannes, France, in 2012.
According to a detailed report by the Daily Mail, three close friends of the alleged victim confirmed that Emhoff struck the woman in the face during a drunken confrontation. The altercation allegedly took place after Emhoff became jealous, believing the woman was flirting with a valet. Witnesses claim he slapped her so hard that she spun around, leaving her distressed and in shock.
The friends provided supporting documentation, including flight itineraries and contemporaneous communications that corroborate the timing and details of the incident.
Despite these damning claims, Emhoff has only issued a vague denial through an unnamed spokesperson to the news outlet Semafor, calling the report “untrue” without addressing the specific accusations.
In August, the Daily Mail also revealed that Emhoff had an affair with his children’s nanny during his first marriage, leaving her impregnated. The image he has cultivated as an advocate for women’s rights and equality is severely tarnished by these accusations, while the media has done little to investigate the matter.
The politics
For conservatives, the allegations against Emhoff are a bombshell, exposing what they see as hypocrisy within the Harris campaign and the mainstream media.
Megyn Kelly was one of the first major commentators to discuss the allegations and called out members of the media for refusing to ask him about the credible accusations of assault during the three times he has been interviewed since the story broke.
Conservative sports show host Clay Travis likewise asked a media member why he didn’t question Emhoff about the allegations, and Daily Wire reporter Mary Margaret Olohan brought attention to the media’s silence.
Left-leaning outlets such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, and CBS News have not mentioned these allegations even once.
Where the media went wrong
After the story broke over the summer of how Emhoff impregnated his child’s nanny during his first marriage, the media mostly came rushing to his defense. The New York Times wrote how Emhoff and his ex-wife remained friends after the affair and deflected to attack Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) for his comments about “childless cat ladies.”
However, even weeks after the story came to light, another mainstream media juggernaut, The Washington Post, published an article titled “The ground-breaking normalcy of Doug Emhoff,” touting his role as Kamala Harris’ number two and for being a family man.
Former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki — now a host at MSNBC — interviewed Emhoff just before the assault allegations dropped, where she asked him questions like how his role as second gentleman “has reshaped the perception of masculinity.” Emhoff responded to the question by saying, “It’s the right thing to do, you know, support women.”
Most recently, Doug Emhoff sat down with MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough, where he asked the second gentleman about allegedly hitting his ex-girlfriend in the face. Emhoff notably did not deny the accusation but merely responded that it was “a distraction” from the campaign.
The mainstream media has shown little interest in investigating these allegations against a man whose wife could potentially become the President of the United States.
Why it matters
The allegations against Doug Emhoff are significant because they undermine the notion that the political left champions women and women’s rights when a major Democratic figure faces little media scrutiny for credible accusations that he struck a woman in the face.
Nearly every mainstream media outlet covered former First Lady Melania Trump recently breaking with her husband and the GOP for coming out in support of abortion, yet when possibly the next first spouse is accused of violence against women, all they have to offer is silence.
