The Trump Administration Seeks to Dismantle the CFPB

Conservatives have long alleged abuses from the Obama-era consumer protection agency.

What’s happening: The Trump administration initiated massive changes to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), beginning with the removal of two top leaders. These firings are just the beginning of the administration’s ultimate goal of dismantling the 1,700-person agency.

Zoom out: The CFPB, initially conceived by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), began operating in 2011 in response to the 2008 financial crisis. On paper, it is responsible for overseeing financial products and services to ensure banks are not taking advantage of their customers.

Republican backlash: Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought — who Trump has now made acting CFPB director — argued the agency “has been a woke & weaponized agency against disfavored industries and individuals for a long time” and that it must be shut down. Vought’s claims were echoed by DOGE Director Elon Musk.

  • Accusations: Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg accused the Biden CFPB of trying to pressure his social media platforms into censoring content, with Zuckerberg revealing that the agency had been “looking into” Meta despite the company not being a bank.

  • Choke Point: The agency was also accused of playing a role in the Obama-era Operation Choke Point, where banks were allegedly pressured by the CFPB to deny services to suspected fraudsters like gun stores and payday lenders — without any due process.

Closing its doors: Vought instructed CFPB staff to stay home and not do any work until at least this Friday. He also told the Federal Reserve he would not be requesting funding for the agency, as the CFPB’s “balance of $711.6 million is…excessive.”

Pro-CFPB conservatives: Not every conservative is anti-CFPB. UnHerd’s US Editor, Sohrab Ahmari, argued that the agency plays a necessary role in specifically protecting Trump’s base by preventing them from being “debanked,” tackling corporate “junk fees,” and safeguarding military veterans' privacy from data brokers — issues the agency has recently taken on.

Why it matters: The CFPB’s dismantling underscores the Trump administration’s goal of slashing government agencies, many of which they believe have been weaponized by progressives. It also highlights the divergences in the MAGA movement between the government-cutting/Silicon Valley side and populists who see government as a tool that can be used for good.
