President Donald Trump announced Monday that he is placing the Washington, DC, police department under federal control and deploying the National Guard to the city.
At a White House press conference, Trump declared a public safety emergency, calling it “Liberation Day” for the capital.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that 800 federal troops will deploy across the city within the next week to clean up, as the president put it, DC’s “crime, savagery, filth, and scum.”
