What happened: Tucker Carlson, The Babylon Bee, and Charlie Kirk all had their Twitter accounts locked for calling Assistant Health Secretary Rachel Levine, a transgender woman, a man. This comes after USA Today awarded Rachel Levine one of its Women of the Year accolades.
The three refuse to comply with Twitter's ultimatum: delete the tweet or lose access to your account.
Elon musk considers new social media: Elon Musk is a known fan of The Babylon Bee. After the satirical outlet lost access to its Twitter account for the Rachel Levine tweet, Musk penned a series of tweets criticizing Twitter for censoring along partisan lines.
"Given that Twitter serves as the de facto public town square, failing to adhere to free speech principles fundamentally undermines democracy," Musk tweeted Friday. "What should be done?"
Big picture: Social media censorship continues to grow. Despite many conservative attempts to create new social media companies to solve the problem, Twitter remains the central hub for conversation. Many are urging Elon Musk to outright buy the platform rather than create a new one as prior attempts have failed.
