Q: In light of yesterday’s story, do you think there's a realistic path to viable third or even fourth parties in America? — Denise G.

A: In my view, it’s pretty unlikely that a multi-party system will be viable any time soon. Starting a third party is extremely expensive, and they typically only have a chance at winning by drawing enough support from Republicans and Democrats.

This would require a catastrophic collapse of both major parties that we’re just not currently seeing.

The best-case scenario for a third party would be similar to Ross Perot in the 1992 election, drawing around 19 percent of the vote in the general election. Some say that he took enough votes from H.W. Bush to give Bill Clinton the election, though it’s impossible to say whether that’s actually true since he basically took an equal number of votes from both sides.

Despite Perot’s impressive performance, he didn’t even come close to winning a single state or gaining a single electoral vote.

Tucker Carlson’s — or whoever else’s — third party would only act as a spoiler for the GOP. For now, the Democratic and Republican Party machines will continue to dominate American politics.
