WHAT WE'RE WATCHING

🇫🇷 France will recognize a Palestinian state. French President Emmanuel Macron announced he will recognize a “State of Palestine” this fall. Macron said it was crucial to ensure “viability” for such a state, and added it should contribute to Middle Eastern security by “accepting its demilitarization and fully recognizing Israel.” France joins Ireland and Spain as the only Western European states to make such a move.

🇰🇭 Cambodia and Thailand are close to all-out war. While the two Southeast Asian nations have clashed before, the current fighting — over religious sites along their colonial border — is the most serious yet, displacing 130,000 people. It began with Cambodian attacks, though they claim Thailand broke a ceasefire. Despite its alliance with Thailand, the US is unlikely to get involved.

🇪🇺 Europe demands an end to the war in Gaza. The UK spearheaded the “London Statement,” signed by 30+ nations, declaring “the suffering of civilians in Gaza has reached new depths.” It criticized Israel’s “drip feeding of aid” as “dangerous,” urged more aid access, and cited reports of aid seekers being killed. The group also demanded Hamas release its remaining Israeli hostages.

🇺🇳 ICJ put countries on the hook for greenhouse gas emissions. In a surprising ruling, the International Court of Justice declared that wealthy nations that fail to reduce greenhouse gas emissions can be held financially liable in lawsuits by poorer nations. Even states that have left treaties like the Paris Agreement are still liable. The Trump administration responded by saying they are putting “America first.”

European media is lying about US deportations

_WHAT’S HAPPENING_

On Thursday, we reported on how American media was twisting — or making up — stories about ICE deportations. But they’re not alone: European media across the continent have obfuscated or lied about a series of deportations since Trump’s return to the White House.

  • French media claimed a scientist was deported for anti-Trump texts, but the US revealed it was for hiding Los Alamos secrets.

  • These hoaxes underscore a broader point, one that has appeared in seemingly unrelated issues…
