🏛️ Capitol Reset: GOP Sparks Fly
Also, the House passes its sweeping policy bill

WHAT WE'RE WATCHING

✅ The House passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The bill — which includes an end to taxes on tips, defunds Planned Parenthood, funds the border wall, and locks in the Trump tax cuts — passed with only two dissenting Republican votes. Passage is a major win for Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who could only lose three votes. The bill now moves to the Senate. Then, the two sides will create a compromise bill and, if passed, send it to President Trump’s desk.
😰 Republicans fret after Musk said he’s spending less on politics. Elon Musk was the largest GOP donor in 2024, spending nearly $300 million to help President Trump return to the White House. But now Musk wants to spend less, saying he’s “done enough.” Musk’s decision could cut off a major source of funds for GOP candidates, who were out-raised by Democrats last month.
🚗 Senate Republicans abolished California’s combustion engine ban. California recently passed a law that would have banned combustion engines by 2035. This kind of phase-out would have meant automakers scaling back significantly, damaging the state’s economy. But now that the Senate has voted to repeal the Biden-approved emissions waiver allowing the state to set stricter standards, the ban will be blocked once President Trump signs it into law.
⏰ Republican Senators are letting almost 80 Trump nominees languish. Democrats can force Republicans to debate each nomination for at least two hours, which drags the process out; however, all the nominations could be completed if the Republican leadership scheduled votes on Fridays, like Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) promised. However, a new report found that they’re sticking to a Monday through Thursday afternoon work schedule.

Tensions flare between blue and red state Republicans

WHAT’S HAPPENING
A new report further strengthens the idea that Donald Trump’s 2024 victory was driven by an expanded, more diverse political coalition.
This new coalition has allowed the Republican Party to win in ruby-red areas like northwest Texas, but also swing districts in blue New York — just enough to deliver a razor-thin majority for House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA)…
