☕ Daily Brief: American Aid Feeding Gaza

Also, Minnesota lawmakers gunned down

From the weekend:
WHAT WE'RE WATCHING

🔫 Minnesota lawmakers targeted in politically motivated shootings. Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman (D) and her husband were shot dead, while Sen. John Hoffman (D) and his wife were wounded in targeted attacks by a man now identified as Vance Boelter. Governor Tim Walz (D) confirmed the attacks were "politically motivated assassinations.” Boelter was appointed to Gov. Walz’s Workforce Development Board in 2019, was involved in international Christian missionary work, and had reportedly created a list of “prominent pro-choice individuals in Minnesota” in his manifesto.

🚀 Trump allegedly rejected Israeli assassination of Iran’s leader. President Trump reportedly rejected an Israeli proposal to kill Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in recent days, with a senior administration official stating, "Have the Iranians killed an American yet? No. Until they do, we're not even talking about going after the political leadership." While some conservatives blame Trump for escalating a foreign war, the president pumping the brakes on this assassination signals he is taking a measured approach.

🎖️ Trump's $45 million Army parade showcased military might. The president celebrated the US Army's 250th anniversary with a massive Washington parade featuring Revolutionary War reenactors, futuristic robot dogs for bomb detection, and next-generation XM7 rifles. The spectacle, which coincided with Trump's 79th birthday, sparked some pushback from conservatives in addition to Democrats. The parade also overlapped with massive, anti-Trump “No Kings” demonstrations across the country.

📢 California senator detained after disrupting DHS briefing. Sen. Alex Padilla (D-CA) was handcuffed and removed from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem's Los Angeles press conference about immigration protests, claiming he was "simply asking a question" like any member of the press. Video shows Padilla interrupting Noem’s press conference and resisting removal by officers. But his bid for attention was quickly eclipsed by Israel’s strikes on Iran.

THE MAIN STORY

US-backed aid is feeding Gazans. Hamas is furious.

WHAT’S HAPPENING_

In mid-May, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu allowed the resumption of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.

The method chosen by the Israeli and American governments for allowing aid — the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) — has been challenged by Hamas’ efforts to control the entirety of aid coming into the Gaza Strip.

However, by tightening control over the distribution network, GHF has delivered millions of meals despite interference from the terror group.

_THE FACTS_

  • Israel’s government reportedly hopes the US-backed GHF will cut Hamas out of the aid distribution network, as — unlike other aid groups — it does not work with the terrorist organization.

  • Hamas has told Palestinians to avoid receiving GHF aid, alleging it’s an Israeli scheme to collect intelligence.

  • Last week, GHF provided 45 truckloads of food in one day — by its count, the equivalent of 2.5 million meals.

  • Gazans rushed to be the first to get aid, causing chaos at distribution sites.

  • One day later, Hamas killed at least 8 GHF workers.

  • Leaked Telegram messages showed Hamas’ plans to attack other distribution sites.

  • GHF has also rebuffed claims that Palestinians have been fired upon by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) at their sites. The mainstream media previously ran with this false narrative.

  • The organization has been criticized for not working with other aid groups and for operating in only select locations, forcing Gazans to travel long distances.

  • However, fewer locations mean GHF and the IDF can more tightly monitor the distribution of aid and prevent Hamas from stealing it.
