Technology’s impact on children
Q: I read an article a while back that said the people in Silicon Valley who come up with all the technology do not allow their children to use that technology in their schools, as they push on the rest of us.
I work in a rural school district and have seen the effects of excessive technology and screen time in schools. Is this true? If so, what are they trying to do to our children? — Jeana in Jay, OK
A: I have heard this exact point, too. In fact, this was discussed in the 2020 Netflix doc “The Social Dilemma.”
They stated in the documentary that executives at major companies like Google and Meta do not let their kids use any of the tech they develop, and instead give them wooden toys to play with.
The purpose of smartphones, tablets, etc. is to make them as addictive as possible to keep us hooked and coming back for more — like drug addicts. I say this to you as I write from my MacBook, with my iPhone and AirPods on the table, wearing my Apple Watch. I’m guilty of being enslaved to our tech overlords.
The science is crystal clear on the negative effects of technology on kids. A 2023 NIH study found that high screen exposure negatively affects language development, executive functioning, and cognitive skills in young children. The American College of Pediatricians found that excessive screen time disrupts sleep even in toddlers as young as 6 months, leading to developmental delays and behavioral issues.
You’re right to be skeptical about the influence of technology on children, and I’m sure, as somebody who works in a school district, you see firsthand the harm it can bring upon children.
