WHAT WE'RE WATCHING

🌊 Biblical floods in Texas leave at least 80 dead. The catastrophic flash flooding along the Guadalupe River has claimed over 80 lives, including dozens of children who were attending Christian summer camps in Kerr County. President Trump announced that he signed a disaster declaration to provide resources for the county. Trump said he may visit Texas in the coming days as search and rescue operations are still underway.

🇺🇸 Trump signed the Big, Beautiful Bill on July 4. President Trump signed the sweeping budget bill into law on Independence Day, meeting his self-imposed deadline. The ceremony featured a national anthem, a B-2 flyover, and a speech declaring the bill a “triumph of democracy.” The new law locks in Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, boosts border security, enacts Medicaid and SNAP work requirements, defunds Planned Parenthood for a year, funds missile defense, and ends taxes on tips and overtime.

👮 US arrests 264 fugitives in Operation Apex Hammer. Federal authorities have apprehended 264 fugitives in New Jersey as part of "Operation Apex Hammer," including 17 homicide suspects and 95 known gang members with a combined 2,625 prior arrests. Two illegal migrants wanted for sex crimes were among those arrested. This latest operation to yield mass arrests under Trump comes on the heels of Operation Patriot which apprehended over 1,400 in Massachusetts.

🌍 Trump issues trade ultimatums. President Trump has signed letters to 12 countries outlining various tariff levels they would face on goods exported to the United States, with the "take it or leave it" offers scheduled to go out today. The tariffs could reach as high as 70 percent, with most set to take effect August 1. This shift from traditional diplomatic negotiations to direct ultimatums signals Trump’s more proactive approach to achieving “America First” trade policies.

THE MAIN STORY

Republicans grapple with the Big, Controversial Bill

WHAT’S HAPPENING_

President Donald Trump signed the Big, Beautiful Bill (BBB) on Friday, implementing major policy changes that include both substantial spending increases and substantial cuts.

But these policy changes may bring risks, as the bill is unpopular with the American people. Democrats will be certain to club the GOP over certain provisions in next year’s midterm elections.

_THE FACTS_

  • The BBB included spending increases for ICE, tax credits, tax cuts, and more.

  • It also added work requirements for Medicaid — which the Congressional Budget Office estimates could remove coverage from over 11 million people by 2034.

  • The total reductions in Medicaid spending, slowly being made over the next ten years, will reach over $1 trillion.

  • The bill bans states from increasing the provider tax, often used to pay for hospitals.

  • It cuts the federal matching rate (the amount the federal government “matches” state spending) for any state that includes illegal migrants in Medicaid spending.

  • Many of the reductions are reversals of Obama and Biden-era increases; both presidents dramatically increased the program without fully paying for it.

  • Roughly half of New York City’s residents are now on Medicaid. In California, fully 40 percent of people now rely on the program.

  • In 2018, just one-third of Californians were on Medicaid — yet the feds found California had wrongly added up to 630,000 people who didn’t qualify.

  • One poll found that the “no tax on tips” provision was extremely popular, with 73 percent backing it.

  • A Fox News poll showed Republican support for the bill was at 67 percent, while only two percent of Democrats approved it.

  • Another recent poll found the bill as a whole was mostly underwater, with 55 percent of voters disapproving. But when asked about the Medicaid changes specifically, voters were evenly divided.
