Both offer a daily email on politics and culture, but they differ on price, ownership and approach. The Free Press does not describe itself as conservative. We publish Upward News, so we stick to each outlet's own words, the raters' published scores and news reporting, and we show our own weak spots too.
Conservatism. Upward News: Written for conservatives; MBFC calls it a moderate conservative perspective. The Free Press: Not conservative by its own account; founder calls herself a radical centrist.
Trump. Upward News: Generally favorable to Trump's policies, with some skeptical analysis (e.g. his Putin strategy). The Free Press: NPR calls it "relatively measured" on Trump, with occasional criticism.
Israel. Upward News: Sympathetic to Israel; critical of anti-Israel activism. The Free Press: NPR calls it "staunchly pro-Israel".
Woke politics. Upward News: Critical of DEI and campus ideology. The Free Press: Critical of progressive views on gender, DEI and campus speech.
Pick Upward News if you want a short, free briefing written for conservative readers, from an independent publisher with no outside investors. Pick The Free Press if you want a subscription publication with a broader, politically mixed approach and longer pieces.
